Super Mario Bros. 3 25th Anniversary

Ahh Brings back memories

For those of you who’ve been playing video games your whole life, (and I assume if you’re looking at this site that’s the case), what’s the first video game you remember playing? Well mine is Super Mario Bros 3. It turned 25 today and it’s a game worth celebrating.

First a few facts, take it away Wikipedia!!!

– It was released in Japan on October 23, 1988; in North America on February 9, 1990; and in Europe and Australia on August 29, 1991 for the Nintendo Entertainment System

-The game was first shown in North America in the 1989 movie The Wizard as a way to advertise it; this also marked the first time that a Mario game was advertised in a movie.

-Unlike Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 2, this game is the first Mario game that has a world map, a feature that has been carried over into every subsequent title in the series. Like Super Mario Bros., the game features eight total worlds spread out across eight different maps, each one featuring a different name, theme, and boss; the inclusion of thematic worlds would also be carried over into future titles in the series.

-Shortly after the release of the game, a cartoon named The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 was made. The cartoon was based on the game, but with a different plot. In the cartoons, King Koopa and the Koopalings tried to take over the real world as well as the Mushroom Kingdom.

Have you ever seen this show? It’s terrible!

If you haven’t played Super Mario Bros 3, you should! It’s where all Nintendo’s good ideas about mario came from. Themed worlds? Check. Cool transformations that can make you fly and swim faster? Check Koopa Kids? Check. Airships? Check. Little fun mini-games where you win cool items? Check. Fat Mario?? BIG CHECK

This game looks amazing for being 25 years old! I recorded myself playing it on an emulator if you want a refresher! Warning: I ramble a ton and I do a pretty shitty job of showing off the game.

Do you have any fond memories of Super Mario Bros 3? Leave them in the comments!

Questions: Rock Band

As we reported in this post earlier today. Harmonix has announced new Rock Band 3 DLC after two years of silence. There are a lot of questions regarding why this is happening but luckily our Rock Band Expert, Mike is here to ask himself those questions and try to answer them.

Why are you considered a Rock Band Expert?

I’ve been playing Rock Band since Rock Band 1. I have over 1,000 songs available to play on my Xbox 360. I’ve been in numerous Rock Band competitions with my band Jimmy Twinkle and The BAD. A few of them we even won, netting us a bunch of awesome swag and giving us trips to NYC and Atlantic City for the Total Rock, Total Rewards Rock Band competition. I think I qualify as an expert.  On a more serious note, Rock Band holds a special place in my heart. It’s the first (and probably only) game i’ve been really really good at and it allowed me to do amazing things that I never thought I’d do in my life.

Why do this now?

That’s a great question! It doesn’t seem to make sense to stop releasing songs for a few years, then start again. A few months ago, Harmonix asked people to take a Rock Band related survey that asked questions like “What would you be more excited for?” and listed a bunch of different options. One of the options was New Legacy DLC for Rock Band 3. My guess is that this option was pretty popular and it compelled them to make more DLC for Rock Band 3.

Will they continue to release songs?

I think so. The Rock Band fan base is ravenous whenever it comes to new news or content. Harmonix knows they can’t simply give these people a small taste and not expect them to come back for more. I do not think it would be every week like it was before, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they released three songs a month.

Why should we care?

If you like any of the three artists or songs being released and you still have the ability to play those songs. I’m not a huge fan of the song choices. I’ll probably pick up the Foo Fighters song. Also I know I’m in the minority that I still have my complete Rock Band setup(even if its a little beat up.) But you have the ability to play these songs and your interested, you should pick them up. Harmonix is an amazing game company that deserves support.

Can I buy new instruments for Rock Band?

This is very hit or miss. Amazon always has people selling things, but the quality is always questionable with these instruments. You would have to buy used, and this is a huge problem Harmonix would run into with a theoretical  Rock Band 4. How do you release new expensive peripherals cost effectively?

Is there a new Rock Band coming?

This is the big question, I don’t have a definitive answer but my guess is eventually. It won’t be this year, but I can’t imagine Harmonix doesn’t have something up their sleeve.  They know people want it. They also know it won’t be the phenomenon it was before. So i expect a more conservative release for “Rock Band 4” with less songs and less flash, but more of the rhythm based gameplay that people love.

Are there any questions about Rock Band I didn’t answer? What do you think Harmonix should do with the franchise? Leave your answers in the comments below and thank you for reading.

Harmonix Announces New Rock Band DLC Tomorrow!

Harmonix has announced today via their forums that they are releasing new Rock Band songs tomorrow, Tuesday, January 13th, 2015. The three songs that are being released are as follows:

• Arctic Monkeys – “R U Mine?”
• Avenged Sevenfold – “Shepherd Of Fire”
• Foo Fighters – “Something From Nothing”

$1.99 USD, £.99 UK, €1.49 EU per song

This comes as somewhat of a surprise as Harmonix has seemed to be done with Rock Band 3 and has said many times they will pick up the series with presumably a new game at a later date. Will they continue to release new songs? Are you excited for this batch of songs? Stay turned to the Game Talk Universe for all your Rock Band and other video game news.

Games Mike is PUMPED for!: Final Fantasy Type-0 HD

It’s a pretty awful name….

Today I’m starting a new feature on the site called Games Mike is PUMPED for! (Great name right?) In this semi-regular article, I will talk about a little bit about a game that will be coming out soon that i’m PUMPED about. Sometimes I’ll have a lot to say, sometimes I won’t, but I’ll always leave pictures and videos so you’ll be able to decide if you’re excited or not! First up, Final Fantasy Type-0 HD. (Another great name right?)

Final Fantasy Type-0 HD

Published and Developed by: Square-Enix

US Release Date: March 19th 2015 for Xbox One and Playstation 4

Now technically this game already came out. In 2011 Square-Enix released this game in Japan for Sony’s Playstation Portable(PSP) system. However it’s never made it’s way to US soil and this is a HD port of the same game with tweaks and extras added.

I recently received a Xbox One for Christmas from my loving generous brother, Jason, who is amazing. After running the possibilities of all the next gen games I could play through my head, this game popped into my head. I was excited for this game without even having a way to play it.

Here are your school attending killing machines, and you thought your school was rough.

FFT-0 HD(For short) is an action-RPG, which stars a group of 12 bad ass military students who each have a different weapon and skills. Your team of super cool, very Japanese(Warriors wearing school girl outfits? Check), teenage killing machines are sent on various missions as your nation is at war with another warring nation. Unlike a lot of previous Final Fantasies, the game uses a real-time battle system similar to previous Square-Enix game Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. You control three of your students at a time and can swap between them at anytime. One of the characters’ weapons is a flute. I’m dead serious. You don’t believe me? Look at this picture.

Hopefully there aren’t any ” This one time at band camp…” jokes.

If you know anything about me, you know I’m a huge Final Fantasy fan. I play almost all of the games, I usually like or love what I play. Everything I’ve seen about this game makes me excited. The story, which I’ve heard is a lot darker than your typical FF game. It’s the first Final Fantasy to receive a M(Mature) rating from the ESRB. The idea of a military school of magic welding bad asses is interesting to me and I’m excited to see how the battle system works.

Are any of you excited for this game? Let me know in the comments! Also I left some videos of the game at the bottom if you want to check it out for yourself! Thanks for reading!
